چکیده

The temporal order of two events, each presented in a different visual hemifield, is judged correctly by typical observers even when their onsets differ only slightly. The present study examined the influence of an endogenous process on TOJ, and shows that the perception of temporal order is also affected when available attentional resources are reduced via an attentional blink (AB) paradigm. Participants were presented with a first visual target stimulus (T1) at fixation and after a delay (either 280 or 1030 ms) a pair of lateralized stimulus occurred (T2). For the dual task and with the 280 delay between T1 and T2, accuracy in the TOJ deteriorated evincing an AB. However, instead of the left favoring asymmetry in normal attention conditions, a significant bias away from the left space emerged during the AB.

The role of the magnocellular and parvocellular pathways in the attentional blink.

The attentional blink refers to the transient impairment in perceiving the 2nd of two targets presented in close temporal proximity in a rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP) stream. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect on human attentional-blink performance of disrupting the function of the magnocellular pathway--a major visual-processing pathway specialized in temporal segreg...

An Individual Differences Approach to Temporal Integration and Order Reversals in the Attentional Blink Task

BACKGROUND The reduced ability to identify a second target when it is presented in close temporal succession of a first target is called the attentional blink (AB). Studies have shown large individual differences in AB task performance, where lower task performance has been associated with more reversed order reports of both targets if these were presented in direct succession. In order to stud...

Temporal distribution of attentional demands during a tennis serve

In the current research, the dual-task paradigm was used to examine the temporal distribution of attentional demands during a tennis serve. Twenty experienced tennis players to performed tennis serves. The participants were asked to respond verbally to an auditory tone presented at four probe positions (PPs) during tennis serves. The probe reaction time measure of attention was administered dur...

Temporal selection is suppressed, delayed, and diffused during the attentional blink.

How does temporal selection work, and along what dimensions does it vary from one instance to the next? We explored these questions using a phenomenon in which temporal selection goes awry. In the attentional blink, subjects fail to report the second of a pair of targets (T1 and T2) when they are presented at stimulus onset asynchronies (SOAs) of roughly 200 to 500 ms. We directly tested the pr...

More than meets the eye: The attentional blink in multisensory environments. Commentary on Kranczioch and Thorne

Temporal fluctuations of attention can influence performance of cognitive tasks substantially. A common paradigm to investigate temporal fluctuations of attention is the attentional blink paradigm. Kranczioch and Thorne (2013) report new evidence for the impact of auditory stimuli on the visual attentional blink in the current issue of Advances in Cognitive Psychology.
